Bentaleb’s emergence as a key figure in this Spurs side is remarkable given that he is just 20-years-old and his stock is rising by the game.

The Algerian international possesses masses of ability and looks refined beyond his years.

There is a battling presence to his style, but he backs this up with the ability to dictate play and beat opponents with his skill in possession.

Bentaleb looks a player who Tottenham will be able to build their team around for the years to come and his future is limitless if he continues to progress at his current rate.

The youngster scored his first goal for the Lilywhites in the Capital One Cup last night against Newcastle United, but it is the consistency of his performances which is the most startling feature of his game.

Bentaleb is a player who has largely came through without hype – the fact that he is not an English born youngster or a man who likes the limelight has helped in this respect – but his talent is obvious to anyone who watches Spurs.

Indeed, he is playing a role for the side nobody else in England, of the same age, does. Bentaleb acts as a box-to-box midfielder, required to be disciplined but also help the side in an attacking sense for Mauricio Pochettino’s making him a vital cog in the Tottenham machine.

It is a lot of responsibility to place on a player who is still only beginning to make his name in the professional game, but is proving that he can cope with it.

Bentaleb is already far superior to the average Premier League midfielder and his making more touches, passes (at a better accuracy rate) and interceptions than most of his peers.

‘Sherwood’s pet’ was the name given to Bentaleb as he broke through at Tottenham Hotspur, as he was unfairly criticised, but nobody is calling him that now.

The tireless central-midfielder looks the prized possession to come out of Spurs’ academy and is showing even greater potential than Harry Kane and Ryan Mason, who have also taken plaudits this season.

For Bentaleb it will be important to remain grounded, but he is a unique star in the Premier League and it appears only a matter of time before Tottenham’s unsung man becomes one of the poster-boys of the English top-flight.
