Mystery striker is reportedly about to join Newcastle, £16.6m deal agreed

As if things couldn’t get more exciting for Newcastle United supporters.

The Magpies fanbase have just seen their club spend £40 million odd on Bruno Guimaraes in what is a massive coup for the St James’s Park outfit.

Speculation had suggested that Arsenal and Spurs were keen on the Brazil midfielder, making it quite a high-profile addition by Newcastle.

This transfer was announced on Sunday, but deadline day promises more fireworks and excitement.

That’s because Newcastle are reportedly on the brink of signing a mystery striker.

According to Give Me Sport, an unnamed number nine is on the verge of joining Eddie Howe’s troops in a £16.6 million deal, with the goalscorer in question coming from a European club.

The report comes from Dean Jones who is often a reliable source for transfer-related matters.

Who is it?

Duvan Zapata is the striker most recently linked with a transfer to St James’s Park, but it can’t be him because it was reported on Sunday that Newcastle had made a £43 million offer for the Atalanta marksman.

One potential candidate is Liverpool’s Divock Origi.

The Belgium international has already been linked with a move to Tyneside but, opposite to Zapata, £16 million seems a little high for Origi, considering he literally might not even play between now and the summer after Liverpool nabbed Luis Diaz.

Of all the possible identities to this mystery striker, Hugo Ekitike might potentially be a good shout.

The 19-year-old Reims attacker was earlier linked with a £25 million move to Tyneside and with this being the final day of the transfer window, well perhaps a cut-price figure is in the offing.

Honestly, it could be many different players but really, anyone would be an upgrade.

With Callum Wilson out injured, Chris Wood – who also joined the Magpies this winter – is their best source of goals right now and considering he wasn’t the most prolific of goalscorers at Burnley, a striker partner of any description could be brilliant.
