Gregg Evans has given an interesting update on Aston Villa’s plan to fill their striker position for the remainder of the season.

It had previously been reported that Villa will look to sign a striker before the end of the January window, but now it seems as though that isn’t the case.

Indeed, Evans says that he’s not heard anything about a new attacking arrival this month, claiming that he’s heard that the club will give Wesley a chance when he is fit.

“Not that I’ve heard. If something happens it will be a surprise, and a move that has been decided late on,” Evans wrote in his Q&A session on The Athletic after being asked about Villa signing a striker.

“My understanding is that they will give Wesley the chance when he’s fit.”

This could either be a masterstroke or something that massively backfires.

For the first time in years, Villa are in a position in which they can realistically think about qualifying for Europe next season, and a backup striker is the missing piece of the puzzle.

Wesley is certainly capable of filling that role. However, this is a player that hasn’t played for 12 months at this point, so his match sharpness will be nowhere near the desired level.

However, we’ve seen players come back from injury stronger in the past, and if Villa have faith in Wesley to do that, who are we to doubt them?

Fingers crossed this is a plan that works out for Aston Villa.
