Gabriele Marcotti has said that Antonio Conte’s chances of getting the Tottenham Hotspur job may not yet be over on ESPN FC.

Tottenham pushed to land Conte last week and held talks with the Italian.

It appeared that the former Inter Milan boss was all set to take over at Spurs, but at the last minute the talks collapsed.

Tottenham are now believed to be looking at other options, with the club seemingly deciding that Conte was just too difficult to land.

However, Marcotti has surprisingly suggested that Spurs may simply be walking away as a negotiating tactic.

“I wouldn’t even necessarily take it as a given that this is done with,” Marcotti said.

“My understanding is that talks have stalled and Spurs are looking elsewhere but we’ve seen this negotiating ploy before, hoping one side or the other blinks and we could be headed in that direction.

“But the fact that [Mauricio] Pochettino all of a sudden is top of the list again, I think that also tells you something.”

A shock update

If Daniel Levy is using his current strategy as a negotiating tactic, then it has to be considered a risk.

Tottenham have now been managerless for 48 days, and can ill-afford to waste much more time in finding a new boss.

It would, therefore, have to be considered a major shock if Tottenham did return to Conte.

The update does just add another layer of intrigue, in what is becoming an increasingly uncertain situation for Spurs.

With talks falling through with Conte, no clear favourite has emerged.

And it remains to be seen which direction that Tottenham go, especially as incoming sporting director Fabio Paratici may have his own ideas over who Spurs should appoint.
