Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly going after a player who Arsenal icon Ian Wright loves.

According to Duncan Castles, Spurs are keen on signing Manchester United defender Eric Bailly.

Tottenham will need to bolster their defence under Antonio Conte and this is someone who Arsenal looked at, prior to him going to Old Trafford under Jose Mourinho.

And even Wright admitted back in 2017 that he was ‘jealous’ of Manchester United, claiming he wanted the Gunners to sign him.

He said: “Pace, athletic ability, defending, reading, strength, you think to yourself: ‘yeah, you can see him being at United for the rest of his career.

“You just have to think to yourself: ‘my god, what a find’. He’s one of those who make me quite jealous that Arsenal couldn’t find someone like him. It makes me jealous.”

Could Tottenham get him?

The Ivorian powerhouse has only played one Premier League game for the Red Devils this season.

Even with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gone, it still seems unlikely that he’ll play more regularly under Michael Carrick – or the Norwegian’s long-term successor.

Tottenham could do with additional centre-backs – well, strong ones – and if Antonio Conte feels that Bailly is a good fit then it could be a cracking signing.

As for Wright’s comments, they were made four years ago.

The Gunners needed centre-backs then – and probably every year since – but with Ben White and Gabriel, Mikel Arteta has two brilliant, young options in the middle of his defence.

Still, if Wright is a fan and his move to the Red Devils provoked a sense of envy, then joining his old club’s North London rivals might hurt the legendary hitman even more.
