If Liverpool sign Kalidou Koulibaly, they might well have the best defence in Europe next season and beyond.
The Reds have already made an offer to bring the Napoli centre-back to Anfield this summer [Le 10 Sport] and there have been further murmurs of a potential swap deal in recent days.
Koulibaly, who stands at 6’4, is one of the best defenders on the continent right now, evident by the fact that the Italian club are demanding £89 million for him, despite the fact he turns 29 next month.
Frank Leboeuf, who knows a thing or two about quality central defenders, has suggested to ESPN that bringing the Senegal international to Merseyside, where he’d play alongside Virgil van Dijk, would be so ominous for the rest of the Premier League.
Leboeuf said: “I think Liverpool would be a good fit with van Dijk, that would be fantastic.
“But definitely, I know he has a link with Liverpool, Van Dijk and Koulibaly at the back, my god, that’s going to be another Reds season I guess. Definitely with Van Dijk, when you’re a defender like Koulibaly, that would be the best central defence in the world.”
The ‘my God’ part of Leboeuf’s comments is the bit that’ll resonate with Liverpool fans.
The prospect of having a Koulibaly and Van Dijk axis in the middle of Jurgen Klopp’s defence is so very exciting.
Thing is, if something seems too good to be true then it probably is and with an £89 million valuation, the Premier League champions elect won’t be spending that on a player who turns 30 in a year.
