Leeds United defender Junior Firpo has posted on his Instagram story ‘the best my eyes have ever seen’ after Lionel Messi secured World Cup glory with Argentina on Sunday.

At the age of 35, Messi, who has dominated domestic football for over a decade, finally won his biggest-ever prize – the FIFA World Cup.

The last time Argentina were world champions, the iconic Diego Maradona was dancing his way past the entire England team and also scoring the infamous ‘hand of God’ goal.

But now, the man that seems to be Maradona reborn of the 21st Century – Lionel Andrés Messi – scored two goals in the final against France, as the 2022 World Cup final concluded with a stunning penalty shootout after a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Before a ball was kicked in Qatar, many were hoping that this was written in the stars for Messi to finally add the ultimate trophy to his generational-changing career, and whilst Saudi Arabia provided them with a scare during their opening game, everything went uphill from then on.

Leeds’ £13 million star Junior Firpo (Sky Sports), who played with Messi at Barcelona, posted this message about the PSG man on his IG story: “The best my eyes have ever seen. Football owes you. Congratulations Leo.”

MESSI’S GREATEST-EVER NIGHT

It could have been very, very different for Messi against France, who had Kylian Mbappe score a hat-trick and go on an absolute madness after 80 minutes of the game.

The 2018 World Cup winner provided the biggest of scares to Argentina fans, and in truth, if it wasn’t for a certain Emiliano Martinez, then France might just be champions once more.

Kolo Muani had THE chance in stoppage-time of extra-time to win the game for his country, when through one v one, or even lay the ball to Mbappe, who would have had an empty net to shoot in.

Instead, he met the brute force of Martinez, who proceeded to work his old magic and secure his own legacy into Argentina’s famous footballing book.
