The Portugal international left Southampton in January under acrimonious circumstances.

Hammers centre-back Jose Fonte sat down for an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, and explained how the criticism he has received from Saints fans has been totally unfair from his perspective, highlighting his seven years service to the south coast outfit as evidence of his loyalty to them.

The 33-year-old made the move to East London for £8 million during the winter transfer window amid reports claiming that he refused to train and play for Southampton – something that he strongly denies.

Fonte was a permanent feature in the Saints starting XI during his seven year spell with the club, after moving to St Mary’s from Crystal Palace, for just £800,000 in January 2010.

And he sat down for an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, explaining how the Southampton fans should learn all the facts about his situation before accusing him of lacking loyalty:

“I understand. But they don’t know all the facts. What they can’t forget is the seven seasons and all the success we had together. To say that I wrote an official transfer request to the club, that’s a lie. And also that I refused to train and I wasn’t being a good captain? That’s a complete lie. I’ve always given my best to that club. That’s the main thing the fans should know. My conscience is very clear.”

The Saints have had an impressive history of replacing the stars they have let go throughout the years, so Fonte’s exit will surely not have too much of a bearing on their chances of success over the next few seasons.

Although it is a shame that someone who enjoyed so many good times at the club will be remembered for the manner in which he left, rather than the service he gave.
