Paul Merson has told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (31/10/20 at 2:00 pm) that he doesn’t feel Arsenal’s defence or midfield is ‘good enough’ for their players to open up the game.

The outspoken TV pundit also added that his ‘biggest problem’ with Arsenal is their record against the ‘big boys’ as they prepare for a crucial trip to Manchester United tonight.

Arsenal’s record against the so-called top-six has been a problem way before Mikel Arteta walked through the doors – but he did beat Liverpool after lockdown in the league last season, as well as beating Man City and Chelsea in the FA Cup.

But Arsenal’s style is seemingly frustrating Merson, who cannot put his finger on what is ‘missing’ for the club and warned them about Man United’s attack tonight.

“I think when the game opens up with Arsenal, I don’t think defensively or in midfield, they are good enough,” Merson told Sky Sports. “I think they need to keep games tight.

“My biggest problem is that they just cannot beat any of the big boys. They are not even putting a glove on them. I know they had a couple of chances at Man City, but it wasn’t great.

“They need to go out and make a statement by having a right go at Manchester United. But again, you open the game up and you have those attacking players of Man United then I worry for Arsenal.

“I see what Arteta is trying to do. They are harder to beat. There is something just missing from them still. I don’t get that belief that they are going to win seven games on the trot.”

Well, Arsenal’s clash against Manchester United tonight will provide a big indication as to where the North London club are at.

Whilst the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool have been a level above them in recent years and it’s okay taking a defeat at their hands, those at Old Trafford haven’t, and the Arsenal faithful will be expecting a strong performance.

At the end of the day, it’s about taking those small steps and winning at Old Trafford will only prove that the Gunners are heading in the right direction, but a defeat will leave a lot more questions being asked.
