Danny Gabbidon told Sky Sports during their live coverage of Wales’ win against Mexico on Saturday that he was ‘surprised’ to see Tottenham forward Gareth Bale introduced as a substitute.
Even though it was a friendly encounter, stand-in coach, Rob Page, opted to bring the Tottenham man onto the pitch with ten minutes left on the clock.
Wales were winning the encounter 1-0, so there wasn’t any need for Bale to come on and score a goal in what was a meaningless encounter.
Some competitive games behind closed doors are feeling like friendly games since COVID restrictions kicked in, so it begs the question as to what actual friendly matches are feeling like without the supporters?
Either way, ex-Wales international, Gabbidon, didn’t expect to see Bale introduced, as he thinks that he may have ‘had a word’ with the manager beforehand about coming on.
“Slightly surprised, I have to say,” said Gabbidon. “He was clearly comfortable, looking on and watching this game.
“But it’s a run out for Gareth Bale, as you say for ten minutes – he must have had a word with the manager. He was getting a little cold. Run out. Stretch the legs and preparation for Tuesday.”
Bale is used to coming off the bench for ten or so minutes at Tottenham, so it must have been a little weird doing it for his country.
Either way, he is set to be a sure starter for his country tomorrow night as they take on the Czech Republic in a crucial World Cup qualifier.
Until then, Bale will be enjoying the government allowing the public back on the golf course and you would be certain that the Welshman is one of the first people back on the course.
