Rangers were strongly linked with a move to bring Oliver McBurnie to Ibrox on deadline day.
Rangers manager Graeme Murty has told the Daily Mail that the discussions over new signings on deadline day led to nothing amid links with Oliver McBurnie.
The Gers managed to bring in one more new face on transfer deadline day, as Norwich City youngster Glenn Middleton arrived at Ibrox to reunite with manager Murty.
That concluded a successful January transfer window for Rangers, who not only secured loanee Declan John on a permanent basis, but also added Russell Martin, Sean Goss, Greg Docherty, Jamie Murphy and Jason Cummings.
Fans may have been hoping for a couple more smart additions in the final hours of the transfer window, but that didn’t happen, despite strong links to Swansea City striker Oliver McBurnie.
McBurnie, 21, has found first-team football hard to come by at Swansea this season, and as the deadline approached, clubs were queueing up to take the Scotland Under-21 international on loan.
The Scottish Sun reported that Rangers were hoping to lure McBurnie to Ibrox, amid question marks over Alfredo Morelos’ future, but the Gers ultimately lost out to Barnsley in the race for his signature.
Given that McBurnie is an alleged boyhood Rangers fan, there must be questions raised over just how serious the Gers pursued him, but manager Murty was coy when asked about the subject.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Murty admitted that discussions went on to bring new signings to Ibrox, but nothing materialised – possibly a nod towards pursuing McBurnie’s signature but ultimately failing.
“There were loads of discussions going on about how we improve the squad but nothing materialised,” said Murty.
