Graeme Murty must drop Wes Foderingham to get message across at Rangers

The 26-year-old allowed a tame free kick to drift in at the far post as Rangers lost more ground on second place against Dundee.

Even Manuel Neuer would struggle to look his usual imperious self in front of Rangers’ current back four. However, that’s not to say Wes Foderingham is immune from blame.

The 26-year-old continues to divide the Ibrox fanbase, his at-times excellent reflexes frequently undermined by positional errors and a galling inability to command his area. He is, a la Heurelho Gomes and Simon Mignolet, ‘a good shot-stopper’.

Though every football fan in the land understands such a phrase merely infers a propensity for the odd howler.

And while allowing Kevin Holt’s daisycutter free-kick to drift all the way in at the far post to seal Dundee’s 2-1 triumph over Rangers wasn’t quite up there with a Mignolet flap or a Gomes ’08 spill, Foderingham’s slow reactions have only cranked up the calls among a number of supporters for Jak Alnwick to be handed his chance.

The January signing from Port Vale is yet to make his debut in Rangers colours but another Foderingham error, following on from his shaky performance in Heart’s 4-1 thrashing earlier in the month, means interim boss Graeme Murty suddenly has a tough decision to make.

Former Swindon keeper Foderingham may have been untouchable under the Mark Warburton regime but the Dundee loss represents the ideal opportunity for Murty to shake up his selection and stamp his authority on the squad – though his spell at the helm may only be short-lived.

It’s far from certain that Alnwick would solve Rangers’ defensive woes. After all, his ability to deal with aerial balls was questioned during his time with Newcastle.

But dropping a big name, an undisputed starter, may get the message across that below-par displays will no longer be tolerated.
