Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has been linked with a potential England call-up of late.
Fabrice Muamba has criticised Gareth Southgate’s decision to overlook Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey on Twitter after the Three Lions boss chose to call up Burnley’s Jack Cork instead.
A whole host of England stars have dropped out of the senior squad as Southgate prepares his side to face Germany on Friday, before going up against Brazil four days later.
Liverpool ace Jordan Henderson dropped out of the squad on Tuesday, while Harry Winks and Fabian Delph have also been forced to miss the double header due to injury.
It leaves plenty of gaps in the middle of the park, with Southgate opting to overlook the likes of Shelvey, Jack Wilshere and Danny Drinkwater by handing call-ups to Cork and Jake Livermore.
Former Bolton and Birmingham City midfielder Muamba spoke of his surprise at seeing 25-year-old Shelvey “overlooked again” despite a number of impressive performances for Newcastle of late.
With the 2018 World Cup around the corner next summer, Southgate will be looking to rotate his squad in order to give everyone the best chance to impress and book their ticket on the plane to Russia.
However, it seems Shelvey is way down the pecking order after failing to earn a call-up even after numerous players pulled out, and he will have to continue to impress for Newcastle if he is to be given a late chance.
