The talented midfielder joins Jurgen Klopp at Anfield in a big money move.
Georginio Wijnaldum celebrates scoring his fourth in the win over Norwich
Georginio Wijnaldum has taken to Instagram to send a message to Newcastle fans after his move to Liverpool was confirmed today.
The 25-year old had been the subject of interest from the likes of Spurs and Everton but it was the Reds who acted decisively and paid the £25 million – according to BBC Sport – required for his services.
Georginio Wijnaldum scores for Newcastle from the penalty spot
Wijnaldum only joined the Magpies last season and has been accused of jumping ship following the club’s drop into the Championship, but he implored the fans to understand his reasons for leaving.
His message is unlikely to go over too well with the Toon Army however, with many criticising his habit of going missing too often last season during the club’s fight for survival.
The Holland international joins the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Sadio Mane and Phillipe Coutinho at Anfield and it’s easy to see why he opted to stay in the Premier League.
Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez during the press conference
Newcastle have made a very tidy profit off his sale and can now put the funds to use in securing Rafael Benitez’s remaining targets.
The Spaniard has focused on signing hungry, committed players with Championship experience this summer and with the Wijnadlum windfall; the recruitment process should become that much easier.
