The centre-back has been rewarded for a solid season.
Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer has signed a new contract keeping him at the club until 2021, as confirmed on the club’s official website.
The Austrian was a revelation last season after filling in for the injured Jan Vertonghen, and Spurs fans will be delighted to see his commitment to the club for the foreseeable future.
Wimmer arrived from FC Koln last summer for around £4.3 million – according to the Telegraph – and had to wait patiently to get his chance.
His debut came in a League Cup defeat to Arsenal in September and despite looking assured he failed to see much more game time, with Vertonghen featuring ahead of him in the Premier League and in Europe.
An injury to the Belgian in January brought Wimmer to centre-stage and he grasped the opportunity with both hands.
His excellent long-range passing and comfort on the ball made him a perfect replacement for Vertonghen and by the time the senior defender returned to fitness, many were sad to see Wimmer replaced.
The award of a new long-term deal is testament to the belief Mauricio Pochettino has in the 23-year old and he is sure to play a key role once again next season.
