Could safe standing come to Leeds United’s Elland Road?

MP Hilary Benn has called for safe standing to be introduced at Leeds United’s Elland Road.
Benn, Labour representative for Leeds central since 1999, says he has been working with the Leeds United Supporters Trust (LUST) and believes it is time for authorities to consider partnering with the club to consider changes.
Commenting via a video posted on his Twitter feed, Benn said: “The Hillsborough disaster was a terrible tragedy and the Taylor report rightly recommended all-seater stadia because we all agree that the safety of supporters must come first.
“But we’ve learned a lot about the safe management of crowds since 1989, and there is now a campaign to allow safe standing at football matches for those who wish to stand, using the rail system.
“The Leeds United Supporters Trust is in favour of safe standing at Elland Road and so am I. Let’s give it a go, see if it can be made to work and if it is proven to be safe.”
Celtic fans in the safe standing area
Celtic introduced a safe standing area at Parkhead this season and it has proven to be a major success.
No major clubs in England have applied to replicate Celtic’s experiment, but as Benn suggests, there is a campaign from supporters across the country to get authorities to consider it.

In Leeds United’s case, new owner Andrea Radrizzani would have to push for it once he completes his takeover, although this summer is likely to have other priorities.
Further complications could arise from the fact Leeds do not own their new stadium, instead leasing it. Massimo Cellino had aimed to buy it back but was unsuccessful in doing so.
