Sunderland are hoping to bring in a number of players before next week’s transfer deadline.

Sunderland manager David Moyes has told the Sunderland Echo that both Javi Manquillo and Alfie Mawson are on his radar, with the club close to making a new signing.

The Black Cats have endured a frustrating summer, with manager Sam Allardyce unable to bring in new signing before leaving to take the England job, and whilst Moyes has added four new faces, it’s clear that Sunderland still lack quality.

Papy Djilobodji, Donald Love, Paddy McNair and Adnan Januzaj have all arrived at the Stadium of Light, but with two 2-1 defeats to Manchester City and Middlesbrough, Sunderland need more additions in order to avoid another relegation battle.

With just a week of the transfer window left to go, Sunderland are working hard to bring in new players, and Sky Sports report that they are pushing to land Atletico Madrid right back Javi Manquillo and Barnsley centre back Alfie Mawson.

22-year-old Manquillo will be best remembered for having a season-long loan spell at Liverpool, where he played just ten Premier League games. The Spaniard was on loan at Marseille last season, but appears to have little chance of first-team football behind Juanfran and new signing Sime Vrsaljko.

Meanwhile, Mawson – also 22 – has impressed since joining Barnsley from Brentford last summer, and played a huge part in the club’s promotion from League One to the Championship.

Mawson stands at 6ft 2in tall and has an impressive goalscoring record for a centre back, hitting nine goals in 63 games for the Tykes – and he’s seen as a player who can help solidify the Sunderland back line.

Speaking to the Sunderland Echo, Moyes confirmed that both players are on his radar, and one deal for an unnamed player is close, with more expected before next week’s transfer deadline.

“They are both on our radar,” said Moyes when asked about Manquillo and Mawson. “We are close [to a signing], we are just waiting to find out if it is a goer or not. We have agreement with the club, we have got an agreement with the player – we are just waiting for the final say-so.”

“That’s one deal, but I am hoping there are going to be a few [signings]. We are short of time, and we are really short of players. I’m confident we will get a few in,” he added.
