Moyes offers honest verdict on West Ham’s chances of signing Joao Mario and William Carvalho

West Ham United appear to be unconvinced that Joao Mario or William Carvalho will sign for the club this month.

West Ham United boss David Moyes has told The Mirror that he doesn’t think Joao Mario or William Carvalho will be signing for the club this month.

The Hammers drew 1-1 with Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon, meaning it’s now just one defeat in the last nine games for Moyes and co.

Moyes will still want to bring in new signings before the end of the transfer window, and adding a new central midfielder has to be a priority given that the likes of Mark Noble, Cheikhou Kouyate and Pedro Obiang need competition.

Two names linked prominently with moves to the London Stadium are Portuguese international teammates Joao Mario and William Carvalho, in what would be ambitious moves from the Hammers.

Mario, 25, joined Inter Milan from Sporting in a £40million (Sky Sports) back in the summer of 2016, having starred in his native Portugal domestically and on the international stage at Euro 2016.

The midfielder impressed last season, but has started just five Serie A games this season, and with Inter bringing in Rafinha from Barcelona this evening, he looks set to leave, sparking rumours of a loan move to West Ham.

Meanwhile, compatriot, international teammate and former Sporting teammate Carvalho has been a fixture of the Sporting side in recent years, starring with his strength in the tackle and his poise on the ball.

The Sun recently reported that West Ham were looking to secure a £30million deal for Carvalho having failed to land him over the summer, though that move hasn’t materialised yet.

Now, Moyes has told The Mirror that he doesn’t think either move will happen, as he doesn’t seem too keen on loaning Mario, whilst a big-money move for Carvalho appears unlikely due to Sporting being top of the table.

“I don’t think so because one was meant to be a loan and the other would have been a transfer which I don’t think will happen now because Sporting are top of the League,” said Moyes. “So that would be a no as far as I am concerned,” he added.
