David Moyes believes West Ham United forward Jarrod Bowen is getting ‘back to his best’, speaking to Football London, while highlighting comparisons with Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Kane.

If any player sums up West Ham’s 2022/23 campaign, it’s Jarrod Bowen.

After a sluggish start to the new campaign for both club and player, the England international – like the Hammers as a whole – is clicking ominously into gear. The London giants have won six out of their last seven games, with Bowen scoring four times during that run.

“He is close to being back to his best,” Moyes says; the one-time Hull City forward thumping a fine finish into the Anderlecht net during Thursday’s 2-0 UEFA Conference League victory.

With the Qatar World Cup now just five weeks away, Bowen could hardly have rediscovered his golden touch at a better time. Especially with so many of Gareth Southgate’s other forward options enduring hit-and-miss seasons in front of goal.

And Moyes is relieved to see Bowen performing once again with the intensity and swagger that has become his trademark in claret-and-blue, pointing out that he is not the only player to bounce back from a difficult run of form at the beginning of a new campaign.

“The season before, after England were in the (Euro 2021) final, Harry Kane had a slow start. And then had a fantastic season. I am beginning to see good signs from Jarrod,” Moyes adds.

“Everyone who watched Jarrod can see his development. He looks faster and quicker. He understands a lot more tactically. If you think of all of the best wingers we’ve had, the Ronaldos and Messis, nearly all of them became goalscorers and strikers.

“Maybe he could do that as well.”

Bowen scored a highly-impressive 18 goals for West Ham in 2021/22. It remains to be seen if he can match that tally this term. But outstanding finishes against Anderlecht, Fulham and Wolves certainly bode well.
