David Moyes believes West Ham United were ‘really unfortunate’ to face an inspired David de Gea in their defeat to Manchester United. The Red Devils edged a 1-0 affair in October.

The Irons boss has reiterated his belief of the Spaniard proving vital to Erik ten Hag’s squad taking the spoils. Moyes voiced his certainty of De Gea being the difference following West Ham’s trip to Manchester United. He stated the ‘brilliant’ Spaniard made ‘two great saves’.

De Gea produced some superb fingertip stops to prevent Michail Antonio, Kurt Zouma and Declan Rice from scoring. The 32-year-old’s saves stopped the Hammers from equalising in the closing stages. Marcus Rashford had scored the only goal of the clash after 38 minutes.

Antonio and Zouma only failed to draw West Ham level during their Premier League trip to Manchester United after De Gea got his fingertips to their shots. Rice then forced another top stop from Sir Alex Ferguson’s £19m transfer back in 2011 with his thunderous attempt.

Moyes has now reflected on De Gea’s display ahead of West Ham travelling to Manchester United in the FA Cup. The Irons face the Red Devils in the fifth round on Wednesday night. It is the Hammers’ fourth-straight visit to Old Trafford since their last encounter on home soil.

Moyes has not forgotten De Gea frustrating West Ham at Manchester United

West Ham beat Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford in September 2021 during the third round of the EFL Cup. But Rashford then settled a 1-0 Premier League trip in January 2022 and October’s meeting. Manuel Lanzini scored to seal the Hammers’ result in the EFL Cup.

Moyes expects Rashford will again be amongst the Manchester United players to cause his West Ham squad issues on Wednesday. But the Scot has not forgotten the difference that De Gea made in their last Premier League clash. It was one of his 16 clean sheets this term.

“We have to defend against so many good players in the league,” Moyes noted, via quotes by football.london. “Rashford is one of them. We were really unfortunate David de Gea played really well on the day.”
