West Ham have had an eventful campaign in the Premier League this season. Last summer’s transfer window was viewed as a successful one but their start to the season wasn’t the best.

Manuel Pellegrini was axed midway into the campaign and David Moyes was brought in. Not many people gave the former Everton boss a chance but he did what he was supposed to and kept West Ham in the Premier League.

Now the big question from Hammers fans is the club’s plans for the summer transfer window. The Irons need reinforcements to avoid another relegation-threatened campaign but it looks like they might not have much luck.

Moyes revealed that West Ham will try their best to add a few players to their squad, but their recent expenditure in the transfer market might mean that they cannot afford to do much this summer.

“I think you have got to remember that the club spent £200million [recently],” Moyes told Football London.

“We’ll try and add to it if we can, if we can’t we’ll go with what we’ve got and there are a lot who can improve and a lot who have since lockdown, Micky Antonio is an example of that. We’ll try and get the best out of the players and if we can add to it we will do.”

West Ham bought Sebastien Haller and Pablo Fornals for big money in the summer before signing Jarrod Bowen in January. Tomas Soucek, who signed on loan in the winter window, has now joined permanently as well which has increased the costs.

West Ham’s current stars have to step up

The current financial climate will play its part and West Ham, like many other clubs, will struggle to make big moves this summer. Moyes might just have to make do with what he has got but it will certainly not be an easy task.

A number of West Ham’s key players will have to step up next season. The likes of Felipe Antonio and Haller will need to be more consistent, but if they aren’t, the Hammers might find themselves in a similar position to this campaign in the back end of next term.
