David Moyes has suggested to Football London that West Ham United’s Jesse Lingard should have passed the ball much more swiftly at times last night.
Lingard was one of West Ham’s biggest attacking threats during their 3-0 win over Sheffield United yesterday.
The attacking midfielder’s display drew great praise after the match.
But Moyes actually felt that there were areas where Lingard could have improved, particularly in the speed of his distribution.
He said: “I thought some of Jesse’s stuff tonight was great. He gave us a great outlet, there were one of two times when he could have released the ball a little bit quicker and we could have had more opportunities but he has definitely helped us.”
Lingard did show a willingness to run at Sheffield United’s backline and, perhaps, his desire to hold on to possession was just as he was so desperate to catch the eye.
Lingard has been starved of regular action and is now playing as if he has a point to prove after moving to West Ham.
Lingard was unable to get on the scoresheet last night, but his place in West Ham’s team looks fairly certain at this stage.
The Hammers are next in action on Sunday, when they take on Tottenham Hotspur in what looks like a huge game for both side’s top four chances.
