West Ham United’s upcoming fixtures at home against Burnley and Southampton could define their season, admits manager David Moyes.
David Moyes has admitted that West Ham United’s next two games could define their season following the 4-1 Premier League defeat at Swansea City.
The Hammers were outclassed at the Liberty Stadium as Swansea ran out comfortable winners to move above their opponents in the table.
The result leaves Moyes’ side three points outside the relegation zone and with Burnley and Southampton at home coming up in the next two fixtures, the Scot thinks it is crunch time.
“Yes, they could do,” the 54-year-old was quoted by the Telegraph when asked if the matches would define West Ham’s campaign.
“We are now down to nine games. Before I was thinking, a point game will normally get you to about 40 points; the old-fashioned [safety] figure. But we are now having to do more than that.”
The East Londoners enjoyed a bounce in form when Moyes first took over as manager on November 7 that appeared to move them away from fears of the drop.
However, successive 4-1 losses – first at Liverpool and then against the Swans – has seen that possibility become a very real one again.
With a tough final run-in that sees Moyes’ men face Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City in their final seven outings, what they do in these next two games could well be crucial.
