Bruce Arena has said on MLSSoccer that Matt Turner should leave Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal following his performances for the USA at the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

Arena believes that now that Arsenal goalkeeper Turner has established himself as the number one goalkeeper for the USA national football team, he needs to find a club where he wll play regularly.

The former USA head coach made the comments about Turner after the Arsenal goalkeeper’s performance against the Netherlands in the Round of 16.

Bruce Arena on Arsenal and USA goalkeeper Matt Turner

Arena said: “Matt can’t be at fault for the three goals against and made several great saves in the second half to keep the US alive in the game. Like the team, this was the first time he was truly tested at the World Cup.

“Now, Matt’s going to fall in line with the likes of Brad Friedel and Kasey Keller one day.

“He has to move out of Arsenal to start playing on a regular basis, but he’s proven himself to be a very good goalkeeper for the US.”

Gunners exit?

In our view, Matt Turner is unlikely to leave Arsenal in the January transfer window.

After all, the American moved to the Gunners only in the summer of 2022.

Aaron Ramsdale is the number one goalkeeper at Arsenal, and the England international will stay so as long as he is fit and playing well.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will surely not want to let go of Turner in the middle of the season and leave himself a goalkeeper short.

What about next summer? Now, that could be interesting.

Turner is 28 now, and Arsenal are the biggest club he has played for so far in his career.

Even though the American did well for the USA at the 2022 Qatar World Cup and is now the number one between the posts for his country, it is really hard to see him move to a bigger club than the Gunners.

Would Turner be willing to take a step down in order to play week in and week out?
