The Spurs goalkeeper saved a Sergio Aguero penalty in the all Premier League clash in the Champions League quarter-final first leg.
Tottenham Hotspur have the advantage in their Champions League quarter-final tie after beating Manchester City 1-0 in Tuesday night’s first leg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The all Premier League tie saw Pep Guardiola’s side awarded a penalty 11 minutes in following a VAR review which penalised Danny Rose after Raheem Sterling’s effort hit his arm in the box.
However, Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris guessed correctly to save Sergio Aguero’s effort from 12 yards, and come the half time whistle, neither side had managed to draw first blood in the game.
Tottenham suffered a setback in the shape of Harry Kane having to come off following a Fabian Delph challenge, but Mauricio Pochettino’s side went on to open the scoring through Son Heung-min’s effort after great work keeping the ball in play at the byline.
At full time, Lilywhites midfielder Moussa Sissoko was asked by the Spurs TV reporter about what made the difference in the game and he replied: “I think our desire. We work as a team from the beginning and Hugo kept us in the game with his save at the beginning.”
After the reported pointed out Lloris had saved three penalties in a row – against Leicester City, Arsenal and now Man City – Sissoko said: “Hugo is an unbelievable keeper and he shows it every week. We are very happy to have him with us.”
The France World Cup winner came under criticism earlier in the season for a number of errors, which prompted Pochettino to suggest that his naysayers had “short memories” as reported by the Evening Standard in October.
Tottenham are back in action this weekend with Saturday’s early Premier League kickoff against Huddersfield Town before travelling to the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday for the second leg against Man City.
