Moussa Sissoko has spoken out after Tottenham Hotspur’s impressive 3-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in their Champions League last-16 first leg but had a warning for his team.
Spurs hosted the Bundesliga leaders on Wednesday night and the first half was a tight affair that yielded no goals, but after the restart, Mauricio Pochettino’s side stepped up a gear.
Jan Vertonghen, deployed at left wing-back in the absence of Ben Davies and Danny Rose, crossed for Son Heung-min to sidefoot home on the volley just two minutes after the interval.
The Belgian defender then weighed in with a goal of his own in the 83rd minute as he finished off Serge Aurier’s delivery, before Fernando Llorente wrapped up the heavy win six minutes later.
Sissoko, whose difficult start at Tottenham is now a thing of the past and can now count himself as a fan favourite (as regularly seen by the reaction on his tweets), put in another admirable performance as he got a standing ovation when he came off against Dortmund (Football.London).
Speaking to the official Spurs site on Thursday, he praised his side’s display but stressed that he and his teammates “have to be very serious” when it comes to the second leg next month, to the point that they need to pretend the tie is scoreless as the opposition can be so dangerous, particularly on their own turf.
“The next game will be tough, playing away where they have a massive crowd,” he said. “But from the beginning, we have to be very serious and take this game like it’s 0-0 and try to win the game. That is how we will approach it.”
