The midfielder’s comments are unlikely to go down well at White Hart Lane.

Moussa Sissoko is officially a Spurs player following yesterday’s late swoop, yet his comments about the other club from North London are sure to irk some Tottenham fans.

The Frenchman made his desire to leave Newcastle United clear in various interviews throughout the summer and stated that his preference was to join a Premier League club competing in the Champions League.

He has now got his wish and will hope to feature in Tottenham’s European campaign but he also confessed his fondness for Arsenal in an interview with Foot Mercato in early June.

When presented with the rumours that the Gunners were interested in him, Sissoko replied:

“It’s very flattering. Arsenal is one of the best European clubs. To be followed by this kind of club, it proves that you have the quality. It’s good to know. I hope I will have a chance soon to play in this club or a similar club.

“Arsenal is a very big European club. I think few people would refuse to play there. Everyone knows, I have often said when I was young, my heart was with Arsenal because there were a lot of French players there such as Thierry Henry, Robert Pires, Sylvain Wiltord and Patrick Vieira – who was my idol. The beautiful Arsenal. We’ll see…I cannot tell you that I will go to Arsenal.”

Sissoko hasn’t gone to Arsenal but instead finds himself in the white and blue of Tottenham, and fans will hope his previous allegiances don’t hamper his performance.

Spurs supporters have had to endure their fair share of stick over the deal, with rival fans scoffing at the reported £30 million transfer fee and referencing the Frenchman’s fondness for the club’s oldest enemy.

Yet football fans are a fickle bunch, and if the powerful midfielder can run the show when Tottenham travel to the Emirates in November, all will be forgiven.
