The Newcastle midfielder ultimately joined Tottenham for £30 million on Wednesday night.
Moussa Sissoko has told L’Equipe that there was never a chance that he was going to join Everton on deadline day despite media reports that the Toffees were at one points favourites for his signature.
A summer-long transfer saga came to a dramatic end on Wednesday as Sissoko was reported as being close to joining either Tottenham Hotspur or the Toffees before ultimately joining Spurs in a £30 million deal.
At one point it was believed that Everton were close to securing his signature after registering late interest, with former Toffees captain Phil Neville even tweeting his excitement at the deal.
However, Neville was ultimately left red-faced as Sissoko ultimately signed with Spurs, and the 27-year-old French international has now revealed to L’Equipe that there was never a chance that he would be wearing blue instead of white this season.
Sissoko told the French paper: “I never went to Everton. It’s funny, I was watching TV and I saw that a deal had been done with Everton and that I had signed for them, but I was in London, waiting to sign my contract [with Spurs].
“It is true that Wednesday was rather quick, and it happened in the last hours, but the bottom line is this is done, I have finalised my transfer to Tottenham.
“I knew this club really wanted me. I trusted my agent to do the job from start to finish.”
£30 million is a hefty fee for a player who only showed impressive form for his country this summer after an abject season for the Magpies.
Spurs will be hoping that he can recreate that form on a consistent basis at White Hart Lane, or else their considerable expenditure will soon appear rather foolish.
