Tottenham kicked off their 2017-18 Premier League campaign with a game against Newcastle away from home at St. James’ Park.
The North London outfit won the match 2-0 against Rafael Benitez’s side, thanks to goals from England international midfielder Dele Alli and Wales international defender Ben Davies in the second half.
Sissoko started the game for Spurs in midfield and played for 58 minutes. It was the France international midfielder’s first return to St. James’ Park since leaving Newcastle last summer.
The 27-year-old joined Tottenham from Newcastle in the summer of 2016 for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £30 million.
Newcastle fans booed the the Frenchman throughout the time he was on the pitch, but it seems that Sissoko did not expect anything else.
The former Toulouse midfielder has also stated that it felt good to be back at St. James’ Park.
“I knew that was coming,” Sissoko told Tottenham’s official website when asked about the Newcastle fans’ reaction to seeing him.
“Football is like that sometimes when you move from one club to another and then come back. That’s football and that’s fine.
“Personally, it was good for me to come back, to see everyone because I have a lot of friends here but the most important thing was to go back with the three points and we did that.”
“For me, it was a pleasure to come back here,” added the Spurs midfielder. “I spent two-and-a-half years here, so I have memories of some good moments and some bad moments.
“I came here with a new team and wanted to win this game. It was the first game of the season, we did well and deserved to win. We’re all happy as we go home with the three points.”
