After an inconsistent spell at Newcastle United was rewarded with a big move to Tottenham Hotspur, under-performing Moussa Sissoko must prove himself.

If Tottenham Hotspur scouted Moussa Sissoko properly, the France international’s woeful first season in London should not have come as a surprise.

For while Daniel Levy is often given great credit as a negotiator, Sissoko, despite an eye-catching Euro 2016 and even in an inflated market, never looked like a £30million player at Newcastle United.

At the end of the previous season, Newcastle, inspired by Sissoko, had torn through Spurs at St James’ Park, but the midfielder’s substitution was still jeered by the home support.

Some flashy runs at the summer tournament disguised performances of little substance and Tottenham fell for it at great cost.

But although Spurs were left disappointed by Sissoko’s failings, the player was surely similarly dismayed that his big move to a top-six side had not lived up to expectations.

However, Sissoko looks to have been given another chance at Tottenham, due to injuries, and impressed against Juventus last week to set up a Premier League start on the opening weekend – back at St James’ against Newcastle.

Sissoko is sure to be given a hard time again by Magpies fans, but he must know that, if he is to prove himself as a £30m star, the improvement must start on Sunday.
