Former Newcastle United midfielder Moussa Sissoko has told French website Footmercato he is pleased his old club are doing well this season.

After surprise relegation from the Premier League in 2015/16, Sissoko pushed for a summer move, inspired by his Euro 2016 displays for France.

Tottenham answered his call by paying a big fee for him on transfer deadline day, allowing him to continue in England’s top flight.

So far for Newcastle in the second tier, it has been going well. Rafa Benitez’s side top the table and have won eight of their last 10 matches.

Quizzed about his former side in an interview, Sissoko told Footmercato that he is well aware of their good progress.

He said: “I have lots of friends there. We stayed in touch. I see what they do, that’s fine. They are doing very well.

“I hope it will go on like this all season and they will have the chance to go back in the Premier League.”

SkyBet have Newcastle at 1/16 on to secure promotion at the first time of asking, with their recent form putting them in a commanding position.

Sissoko did not want to play for a year in the Championship, and has instead been featuring in Champions League football with new club Tottenham Hotspur.

The chances are though next season he will be returning to St James’ Park, this time as an opposition player, in the Premier League once again.
