Brendan Rodgers’s side looked on course for a first league defeat of the season when a double from Louis Moult helped the hosts into a 2-0 half-time lead.
Callum McGregor halved the deficit on 48 minutes, before Patrick Roberts found an elusive equaliser for Celtic with 20 minutes to go.
Despite working so hard to restore parity, the Hoops fell behind a minute later when Lionel Ainsworth restored Motherwell’s lead, but Stuart Armstrong levelled again almost immediately in a madcap few minutes at Fir Park.
It seemed set to be a share of the spoils, but in-form midfielder Tom Rogic popped up with a last-minute winner to preserve Celtic’s eight-point lead at the top of the Premiership – though the Hoops do have three games in hand over second-placed Rangers.
Moussa Dembele netted 17 times in all competitions this season and there won’t be many more times that the 21-year-old isn’t among the goalscorers on a day when his team score four.
But the talented French striker did not seem overly bothered if his post-match Twitter message was anything to go by, though he did admit that it was not the best of performances from Celtic.
