Tottenham Hotspur may have run riot against Stoke City at the weekend but were it not for their midfield the players ahead of them would have not had the freedom to score seemingly at will.

At half time, 4-0 up, Spurs looked like having a field day, and while Stoke tightened up after the break there is no doubting the importance of Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama in their latest victory.

Dembele was particularly impressive, finishing the match with a passing accuracy of 94 per cent and recovering the ball on eight occasions.

The Tottenham man also won seven duels, three tackles and one aerial battle, stamping his mark on the match and allowing the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli to excel in the final third.

Dembele has always been a vital cog in Tottenham’s machine and that shows no sign of changing any time soon.

The 29-year-old still has years at the top of his game and on this evidence he will be key when Tottenham finally start adding silverware to their impressive development under manager Mauricio Pochettino.
