With Tottenham trailing to Liverpool, Mauricio Pochettino told his side they could still win the game.

Tottenham’s poor recent run at Anfield continued this past weekend with Liverpool recording a 2-0 win.

Both goals came in the first half from Liverpool’s summer signing Sadio Mane, leaving Tottenham with a mountain to climb in the second half.

Speaking to Tottenham’s official website after the game, midfield star Mousa Dembele shared head coach Mauricio Pochettino’s half-time message.

The Belgian international explained that Pochettino had tried to instil belief that they could still win the game, rather than have them feeling sorry for themselves.

He said: “At half-time the manager tried to wake us up, give us advice as to how we could turn it around and tell us that, like at Manchester City, we could still win.”

“After the game sometimes you need to be relaxed and let everyone think about their own game. There’s not a lot said afterwards, we leave it for the team meeting.”

Dembele remembered the Manchester City game slightly incorrectly, with Tottenham coming back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 rather than winning – but the point certainly will have felt like a victory considering the circumstances.
