Tottenham Hotspur edged out the Black Cats on Sunday.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Mousa Dembele has told the club’s official website that he could not get over how many chances Spurs created on Sunday.

Tottenham beat Sunderland 1-0 at White Hart Lane at the weekend, with Harry Kane netting a 59th-minute winner for the hosts.

The scoreline suggests that it was an even game, but the statistics tell a totally different story.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side finished up with 74% possession and 31 shots at Sunderland’s goal, nine of which were on target, and the Belgian midfielder said it was “unbelievable” how the hosts only scored once on Sunday, given their dominance.

“I thought we’d win with a few more goals but we had so many chances it was unbelievable. It felt like we were on top,” he told the club’s official website.

“If you only look at the scoreline perhaps you might think it was a more even game but it wasn’t like that, we were on top.”

It is worrying for Tottenham how they missed so many chances, and even more so now amid rumours that striker Kane is out for two months.

If true, there will be a bigger emphasis on taking their opportunities when they come, because a marksman as lethal as Kane won’t be around to bail them out.

And failure to do that could be detrimental for their hopes of keeping pace at the top end of the Premier League.
