Mousa Dembele reacts to Tottenham’s lack of signings

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Mousa Dembele believes the lack of signings is not an issue, and the team are better for it.

Belgian international Mousa Dembele is an essential cog in the Tottenham Hotspur machine, his innate ability to retain possession and drive forward is invaluable to Pochettino and the team.

Spurs have been widely criticised for their inactivity in this transfer window, leading many to believe the successes of the past two seasons will be undone. Chairman Daniel Levy defended this (reported by The Independent) by saying he must ‘manage the club appropriately’ and that the current Premier League spending is ‘impossible to be sustainable’.

The 30-year-old was asked about his club’s lack of transfer activity by BT Sport on 9th August.

The ex-Fulham powerhouse responded: “We see it as a positive because we have now played for a few years together. We have a young squad and everybody has a year more experience.”

The central midfielder went a step further, even claiming the lack of signings has resulted in the team benefiting: “I think we are stronger than last year. If new players come they will adapt to the club’s culture.”

“I think it is a positive because we all know the philosophy of the club and the manager” added Dembele.

Another alleged issue in the Spurs team is that of wages, players such as Harry Kane and Dele Ali are undoubtedly paid under market value for their level ability.

That can lead to problems, such as long-serving Kyle Walker leaving for Manchester City to get paid £130,000 a week (as reported in the Daily Mail) – a figure he would never have got at White Hart Lane (or now Wembley).

However, Dembele concludes that player movement is not an issue for those at the club: “We don’t waste too much energy on if people are coming in, we just focus on our preparation and being ready for the first game.”
