Tottenham suffered a 3-1 loss to Manchester City on Saturday evening.
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Mousa Dembele has heaped praise on teammate Jan Vertonghen in an interview with the club’s official website after Spurs were beaten 3-1 by Manchester City on Saturday evening.
Gabriel Jesus broke the deadlock after an inch-perfect long ball from Vincent Kompany, before Ilkay Gundogan doubled City’s lead from the spot. Christian Eriksen got one back, but Raheem Sterling ensured all three points from close range.
The win for City saw them crowned Premier League champions, as Manchester United lost 1-0 to West Bromwich Albion on Sunday, but Dembele praised defender Vertonghen for his form this season despite the loss.
The midfielder described his Belgium teammate as an “unbelievable player”, in what is arguably the former Ajax defender’s best season in English football since his move to Spurs from Ajax in 2012.
“Everyone can recognise that all season, not only now, he’s [Vertonghen] been great for us. That’s how we know him. He’s an unbelievable player,” Dembele said.
Vertonghen, 30, has featured in 42 league and cup outings this term, helping Spurs keep 16 clean sheets and even scoring a goal of his own in the 3-0 FA Cup win over AFC Wimbledon.
The defender’s future in north London remains in the balance, though, with only a year to run on a contract the Daily star claim is worth £100,000 a week.
