Wales fans on Twitter were surprised to see Tottenham’s Gareth Bale make an appearance during their friendly encounter with Mexico on Saturday evening.

The 31-year-old Spurs forward was brought on for the last 10 minutes of Wales’ 1-0 win against Mexico, even though it wasn’t a competitive match.

Jose Mourinho likes to send subtle messages here and there, mainly to Gareth Southgate, about the number of minutes his Tottenham stars play whilst on national duty.

Well, with international breaks now consisting of three games rather than the usual two, it’s not going to exactly provide Premier League managers across the country with those extra hours of sleep.

And Mourinho definitely would have been questioning why Bale was brought onto the pitch for such a meaningless game, especially when he just completed 80+ minutes against Belgium in a World Cup qualifier and is a sure starter for Wales’ crucial showdown with the Czech Republic on Tuesday.

Wales fans themselves did point out that Bale, whose engine isn’t exactly running as smoothly as it used to, was at risk of being injured by his stand-in coach, Rob Page.

From Tottenham’s perspective, it all went well for their Welsh speedster and they will be hoping no problems occur in a few days time against the Czech’s.

Here is a selection of Wales fans reacting to Bale coming onto the field for the last ten minutes last night:
