Mourinho says Tottenham’s £27m man is no longer suffering with injury

Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho has suggested that Steven Bergwijn is not injured currently at his press conference, which was covered by Hayters TV.

Mourinho said in January to Football London that Bergwijn had been struggling with muscle injuries in training and wasn’t fully fit.

But it seems that the £27 million Tottenham man (BBC Sport) has now recovered from those problems.

Bergwijn has not featured in either of Spurs’s last two matches.

But Mourinho says that the Dutchman hasn’t played due to illness, rather than any injury problem.

“He was ill the week of Marine and then he trained with the team only once, which was the day before we play Fulham,” he said.

“No muscular injury, it was not that. He was not ill. He was not even coming to the training ground.”

The news that Bergwijn seems to have shaken off whatever muscle problem he was suffering with has to be considered a positive for Spurs.

The rapid attacker may not have scored as often as many at Tottenham were hoping, but they always look a better team when he is involved.

Bergwijn’s injury and willingness to defend has been key for Mourinho’s system, and now he is back in training, he will surely be in contention to start at the weekend.

Spurs are next in action against Sheffield United on Sunday, when they will be aiming to return to winning ways.
