Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho has told Football London that he felt Eric Dier made a lot of mistakes against Chelsea.

Dier started for Spurs alongside the inexperienced Joe Rodon at the back, and he helped Tottenham keep a clean-sheet against Chelsea.

Spurs were largely fairly solid, as they sat back and soaked up pressure at Stamford Bridge.

Rodon dealt well with what was a massively pressurised full debut, and Mourinho actually suggested that he outshone his more senior centre-back partner.

“I’m very happy with Joe and very happy with the profile,” he said

“To work with Joe has been a pleasure and it’s just a shame that he can’t play in the Europa League.

“His biggest game before this was in the play-offs. He did very well though. Just one mistake but Eric Dier made lots of mistakes, in possession. We’re top of the league and we’re not happy. That’s a good thing.”

Dier did indeed have some nervy moments in the second half, but Chelsea never punished him.

The England international was guilty of giving the ball away in some dangerous areas, but he was always bailed out by a Tottenham teammate.

Spurs have now conceded just one goal in their last five league games, with their defence becoming much more solid.

Tottenham are next in league action against Arsenal, when Rodon and Dier may well start alongside each other again.
