Jose Mourinho has admitted to Football London that thought Ryan Sessegnon was the ‘future’ for Tottenham Hotspur, but changed his mind about keeping him around heading into the season.
Mourinho opted to promote Sessegnon ahead of Danny Rose last term, with the veteran full-back shipped out on loan to Newcastle United.
Rose is now firmly out of contention at Tottenham, but Sessegnon has also been loaned out to Hoffenheim.
That is because Spurs signed Sergio Reguilon from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window, and Mourinho admits that the addition of the Spaniard ultimately altered his plans for Sessegnon.
“I thought our future would be Davies and Sessegnon,” Mourinho said.
“Then we had the possibility to get Reguilon and I thought that would be a good opportunity for Ryan to get game time and develop.
“Danny is not part of our squad. With Danny, the players and agents make the market. If the agent didn’t find a solution for Danny to move then it’s a question you have to ask him.”
Despite Mourinho’s decision to loan out Sessegnon there are still high hopes for him at Tottenham.

Ben Davies may provide solid cover at the moment, but there is a belief that Sessegnon has a far higher ceiling than the Welshman, as the £25 million youngster (BBC Sport) has excellent attacking qualities.
Sessegnon also now has the perfect player to learn off when he returns to Spurs in the form of Reguilon.
Reguilon has really caught the eye in his first few games for Spurs, and looks to be an important part of Mourinho’s plans already.
