Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Steven Bergwijn’s omission from his Tottenham Hotspur squad last night had nothing to do with injury.
Spurs beat Fulham 1-0 at Craven Cottage to move five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea with a game in hand on Thursday.
Mourinho delighted Tottenham fans by starting Harry Kane, Gareth Bale, Dele Alli and Son Heung-min in the same first XI.
But there was no room for the Netherlands winger who couldn’t even make the bench.
And the Lilywhites boss has revealed that although Bergwijn is fit, he just couldn’t find a place for him due to the abundance of attacking quality.
He told a press conference: “I like them all [his secondary attacking players] – Lamela, Lucas, Vinicius and Bergwijn. And Bergwijn was not even on the bench. We have this group of eight players for these attacking positions and I like them all. It depends on the moment.”
The former PSV attacker really does have it all to do now.
Bergwijn, who joined Tottenham for £25 million last January, hasn’t scored in any of his 27 games across all competitions this season, though he has set up six.
But when you’re an attacking player, failing to provide a goal threat just isn’t going to cut it.
