Jose Mourinho has told the media that Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling will play against Tottenham tomorrow.
When discussing the ex-Liverpool man’s absence from the England squad, Football London quote Mourinho as saying: ‘When Eric Dier left the national team injured in the previous month, he didn’t play two matches for Tottenham.
‘He didn’t play a Premier League match and a Europa League match. He needed a couple of weeks to recover and Raheem is going to play tomorrow. These are the little details I think Gareth should explain to us all.’
The former Chelsea boss sounds sceptical about the legitimacy of Sterling’s proclaimed injury, which ruled him out of all three England games over the international break.
Mourinho sounds convinced that the Citizens No.7 – who earns £300,000-a-week at the Etihad Stadium – will be fit to face his side tomorrow, even if it’s unlikely that Pep Guardiola has directly told him that.
Spurs welcome the 2019 Premier League champions to north London tomorrow evening, where a win could take them to the top of the table if other results go their way.
Tottenham’s chances of doing just that would be hugely boosted if Sterling is, in fact, injured and unavailable.
The 25-year-old scored an eye-catching 31 goals in all competitions last season, along with ten assists.
Sterling has scored five goals in 12 games so far this term, along with four assists.
The Kingston-born attacker is one of the deadliest forwards in Europe, and if he does end up on Guardiola’s teamsheet, the Tottenham backline needs to keep an eye on him.
