Tottenham Hotspur continued their pre-season preparations with a defeat at Watford on Saturday.

Jose Mourinho’s side went down 2-1 to the Hornets at Vicarage Road, eight days before their Premier League opener away to Everton.

Losing wasn’t all that significant for a Tottenham side who had many of their biggest and best players on international duty.

And Mourinho has revealed to the club’s official website that his players’ hunger and desire, in spite of the fact the result meant nothing, really impressed him – especially Son Heung-min.

With seconds left, and the Lilywhites still losing by a goal, Son, who earlier scored from the penalty spot, sprinted the length of the pitch and cleared a ball off the line to prevent the hosts from killing the game off.

Here’s what the Portuguese coach said about that moment after the match: “I said to the players at half-time, maybe in the Premier League if we are losing 2-0 at half-time, we have the second half to fight for the result.

“It was a game to give us minutes and a competitive mentality and I really liked the fact that in the last minute, we are fighting to try to score, and then Sonny makes a 100-metre sprint to stop the 3-1 on the counter-attack. So, overall, it was okay.”

That pretty much encapsulates Son’s work ethic and spoke volumes for his attitude as a footballer.

It’s the reason why Mauricio Pochettino brought him to White Hart Lane in 2015 – and it’s the reason why Mourinho is going to start him every single week, fitness permitting.
