Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Tottenham Hotspur fully intend on signing a striker this summer.
Spurs’ lack of forward options was brutally exposed in January.
Once Harry Kane picked up an injury that ruled him out until April, Tottenham’s season effectively ended as Mourinho’s side were dumped out of the FA Cup and Champions League within a week of each other, while their top-four bid also suffered in a major way.
The Lilywhites were linked with plenty of number nines to replace Kane in the short term back in the winter, though Troy Parrott, who Mourinho repeatedly claimed wasn’t ready for senior football at this level, was their only fit and recognised hitman by the time that window closed.
It’s been three years since Tottenham bought a striker – Fernando Llorente joined from Swansea City in 2017 – but Mourinho has confirmed that’ll change this summer.
He said via Football London: “Yes, I want, I need a striker, but I want to make it very, very clear that the club – the structure above me – knows that I need a striker and also wants a striker. Are we going to get one? I honestly believe so.”
This will be music to the fans’ ears.
Yes, Kane is one of Europe’s best hitmen and a striker hasn’t been the priority in recent years, but the 27-year-old has had his fair share of injuries in past seasons and now it’s absolutely essential.
Tottenham supporters have been calling for a top-class alternative to Kane for years, because even Llorente was a bit hit-and-miss in the goalscoring department, and hopefully for their sake, and their team’s sake, they’ll get one.
