Everton have been linked with Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney.
New Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho poses ahead of the press conference
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has ruled out the sale of Wayne Rooney following speculation of a potential move back to his former club Everton, The Telegraph report.
The United captain has been on the bench for the past few weeks and was dropped from the England starting eleven for their 0-0 draw in Slovenia, prompting questions over his future.
Links of a move back to Everton have hit the papers over the past few days, and Toffees boss Ronald Koeman suggested his side would be interested in bringing him back to Goodison Park.

Mourinho, however, has poured cold water over that idea, telling reporters how the United skipper still has what it takes to play at the highest level and is still deemed an important figure at Old Trafford.
“I know he can still play at the highest level. I know he’s the type of player I need. He can play at the top level. I can’t say what’s going to happen when he’s 32, 3, 4, 5 but what I can say is that he’s a very good player, a very important player for us. He’s going nowhere. We like him, he likes us,” Mourinho told The Telegraph.

Rooney played the full 90 minutes in United’s recent 4-1 win over Europa League opponents Fenerbahce, but before that his last start came EFL Cup against Northampton Town five weeks ago.
There are question marks over the player’s fitness and whether injuries have hampened his ability to make an impact this season, yet there is no doubt his form has declined since the start of this year.
Everton are looking to bring in that added quality to help push the Toffees toward a top four place, but on current form they’d arguably be better off looking elsewhere.
