Jose Mourinho has admitted that Newcastle United’s Karl Darlow was Man of the Match during their 1-1 draw at Tottenham Hotspur today.
Spurs and Steve Bruce’s side played out a controversial stalemate in North London.
Callum Wilson bagged a last-minute penalty for Newcastle after Eric Dier was penalised for a handball following a VAR check.
The decision has received widespread condemnation by a series of high-profile figures on social media, given that the Tottenham defender had his back to goal at the time.
Mourinho’s side could and would the game comfortably if not for Darlow, who produced a string of top-drawer saves to keep Newcastle in it.
Here’s what the Portuguese said to Tottenham’s Twitter account at full-time: “The performance was not heartbreaking. It was really good. We were always in control. Lots of chances. Man of the Match has to be their goalkeeper but I’m very, very happy with my team’s performance.”
The Lilywhites have now won one, lost one and draw one in the Premier League so far this season.
Okay they got unlucky with the penalty decision but, really, Tottenham had more than enough chances to kill this one off and although Darlow was in top form, it’s still absolutely two points dropped.
They’ve taken one point from their two home games so far this season, having lost to Everton on the opening weekend, and it’s imperative that Mourinho’s side improve in the final third.
Yes, they scored five at Southampton last week, but scoring once in two games in North London isn’t good enough.
