The Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has insisted his side will ‘collaborate’ with Benfica over Gedson Ferdnandes’s future.

Gedson joined Tottenham on an 18-month loan from Benfica in January.

But the Portugal Under-21 midfielder has played just 13 times since then and only once this season, in the EFL Cup.

That has sparked talk of an early return for Gedson when the transfer window reopens in seven weeks’ time.

And speaking to the Portuguese network Sport TV this week, Mourinho suggested that he and Tottenham will do what is best for the player.

“For me it is never a problem, but a solution,” said the 57-year-old. “Having him on the squad, even if he is not called up and not playing, is an extremely comfortable situation. I will never be the one to push him or say that I don’t want him here because I want to but I understand the situation of the kid and Benfica.

“If the club wants to end the relationship, we will be here to collaborate, because we want the good of the player. Benfica has the power to decide and will be accepted by us.”

The signing of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and revival of Tanguy Ndombele this season have not helped Gedson’s cause.

The Benfica academy product also has Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko and Giovani Lo Celso to contend with in his position.

Tottenham have an option to turn Gedson’s deal permanent, although it looks unlikely at this stage that such a move will be made.
