Motherwell fans have raised an incredible £58,155 to purchase season tickets at Fir Park for unemployed and low-income families – with the club matching it to take the total to a scarcely believable £118,130.

The Fir Park side launched the scheme in response to the Covid 19 pandemic and the impact it has had on supporters, and ‘Well fans responded in their droves to help out their fellow supporters.

Steelmen chief executive Alan Burrows has confirmed that the club will match anything raised by fans as he hailed the Motherwell support for their backing.

“We have pledged to match anything raised, so that’s well over £100k in season tickets for unemployed and low-income families,” Burrows said on Twitter.

“To put that into context, that could be over 500 families coming to Fir Park that might not have been otherwise able to. Let’s push for more!”

Remarkably, Motherwell have already repaid the loyalty shown by supporters last season by confirming any fans who purchased season tickets for 2020/21 will recieve a free 2021/22 season ticket.

Incredible gestures from Motherwell and their support

As individuals and businesses slowly start to recover from the pandemic, the decision to renew last season’s tickets for free was a phenomenal gesture by the Steelmen.

Adding in the near-£60k raised by fans to buy tickets for other supporters – and the fact Motherwell will match it – deserves massive credit from across Scottish football and beyond.

While many clubs simply won’t be in a position to do similar, it is refreshing to see that not every club is looking to claw back every last penny it can.
