Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson is desperate to keep Louis Moult at the club amid interest from Scottish Premiership rivals Rangers.
Rangers’ links with Motherwell striker Louis Moult just aren’t going away. After a summer of speculation linking the 25-year-old with a move to Ibrox, the Scottish Sun reports that the Glasgow giants could make another attempt in January.
The report claims that Rangers refused to meet Motherwell’s asking price in the summer but, with Moult rejecting a new contract and his deal expiring at the end of the season, they will hope to land the striker for a cut-price fee.
Though not if Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson can help it.
“Anybody that scores that amount of goals, we don’t want to leave the football club,” Robinson told STV of Moult, who has scored 30 league goals in the last two seasons.
“I haven’t given up hope of keeping Louis at the club, not by any stretch of the imagination, and will continue speaking to him.”
However, the deal is still very much in Rangers’ hands. Motherwell have attempted to tie Moult down to a new deal but, having seen two bids from Aberdeen rejected in the summer, the talisman called on his club to honour their gentleman’s agreement to let him leave for the right price, per the Daily Record.
That price, understood to be around £500,000, may be difficult to obtain when the former Stoke City youngster will be available on a free transfer just a few months later, however.
Therefore, Rangers are in a position of strength despite the Scottish Sun reporting that there is competition from Hibernian, Millwall, Blackburn Rovers and Brentford.
Motherwell may be forced to sell Moult for a fee below their valuation in January or risk losing him for free in the summer, meaning they may be powerless to prevent the striker, who has three goals in five league games this season, moving to a direct rival.
Although Rangers are facing plenty of competition, it appears they are in an excellent position to land one of the most feared strikers currently plying his trade in Scottish football.
